In Japan, bathing and warming oneself in steam has long been tied to the custom of purifying body and mind with water's cleansing power. In Shinto misogi purification and Buddhist Zen practice alike, ablution holds deep significance.

100% Natural Spring Water from AsoPure Spring Water

Yuya Suizen is filled entirely with natural groundwater drawn from the vein flowing from Kumamoto's Aso caldera to Suizenji Jojuen. This blessing carried into the present through the cold plunge and indoor bath brings body and mind into balance.

  • Cold plunge: connected directly to the groundwater source, so its temperature varies with the season and outside air
  • Indoor bath: heated Aso spring water, an artificial radium bath (not a natural hot spring)

Hospitality for Totonou

Guests are greeted by a hanging scroll brushed by Kundo Koyama, grand master of Yudo. The lounge holds a mid-Edo period painting depicting the scenery of Jojuen garden.

Tiles and stones brought in from Taisho-ji Temple, connected to the Hosokawa clan, form a landscape inspired by the composition of "Hosokawa-style bonseki" (miniature stone landscapes) — an aesthetic refined over time, carried into the present.

Amid the quiet of wabi-sabi, savor the seasons just as they are.
