Matsuya Honkan's commitment — the atmosphere of the property and garden
Our Commitment

What Makes
Matsuya Honkan Different

Since 1950s

A spirit of hospitality, passed down through the ages.

Matsuya Honkan first opened its doors in Suizenji, Kumamoto, shortly after the war. The founder's wish for "hospitality from the heart" remains at the core of this ryokan, unchanged over more than 70 years.

Times change, and the shape of travel changes with them — yet some things remain constant.
These are Matsuya Honkan's commitments.
Please read on for the seven promises we hold dear.

Over 70 years, in the same place.Seven Decades of Heritage

More than 70 years in Suizenji.
Never swept away by passing trends, we cherish what is timeless in this place, while never hesitating to change in order to meet our guests' needs.
"Fueki-ryuko" — tradition and innovation in harmony — is the very shape of Matsuya Honkan.

Beauty connected to the Higo-Hosokawa clan.Hosokawa Heritage Art

Throughout the property, we quietly display ceramics, calligraphy, and crafts connected to Kumamoto's heritage.
The Hosokawa clan, who governed Kumamoto's 540,000-koku domain, were as devoted to culture and the arts as they were to the way of the warrior.
Simply staying at this ryokan beside Suizenji Jojuen Garden lets you feel Kumamoto more deeply, through every detail of its setting.

Seasonal ikebana welcomes you in bloom.Seasonal Ikebana

At the entrance, in the lobby, and along the corridors, we arrange ikebana using flowers of the season.
Cherry blossoms in spring, hydrangeas in summer, autumn leaves, camellias in winter.
The fragrance and quiet presence of flowers — found only in that particular season, that particular moment — greet our guests as they arrive.
