Suizenji Park

Suizenji is a traditional Japanese-style garden complete with Shinto shrine and thatched-roof teahouse. The man-made mound in the middle of the park is a recreation of Mt. Fuji.

Kumamoto Zoo & Botanical Gardens

The Kumamoto Zoo and Botanical Gardens lies along the banks of Lake Ezu and features a lot of rare animals like giraffes and elephants, as well as beautiful plants the whole family can enjoy.

Lake Ezu

Lake Ezu lies just 5km southeast of the city center and is 2.5km long with a perimeter of 6km. The lake itself is divided into Upper and Lower Lake Ezu with a narrow channel separating them in the middle. A lake this large in the middle of a city the size of Kumamoto is rare, and Lake Ezu is an urban oasis where you can see rare wildlife and waterfowl. Kumamoto City also gets 100% of its public water from groundwater and Lake Ezu is a symbol of the importance of water to the people of Kumamoto.

Kumamoto Castle

Considered one of Japan's Three Great Castles, Kumamoto Castle is a must-see if you're in Kumamoto. Built over 7 years starting 1601, the mighty castle looms over and protects the city. The Kumamoto Earthquakes of 2016 caused considerable damage to the castle, but reconstruction continues and there is still a lot to see and learn.

Shimotori & Kamitori Arcades

The Shimotori & Kamitori Arcades combine to make the largest shopping area in the entire prefecture. Shimotori is the largest covered shopping arcade in Western Japan and features a wide variety of places to visit, from department stores and boutiques to cafes and restaurants specializing in local cuisine. Kamitori is in its third phase and features a design inspired by Paris's Musee d'Orsay. Its first incarnation was built in 1960 and was the first arcade in the prefecture. The first three floors along the arcade are under the roof and the arcade features many eateries, clothings shops, and bookstores.

Reigando Cave

Reigando lies among the foothills of Mt. Kinbo, the mountain that stands tall behind Kumamoto Castle. Hidden in a dense forest past the Unganzenji Temple, Reigando houses a statue of Kannon and was the place where master swordsman and samurai Miyamoto Musashi penned his masterwork The Book of Five Rings.

Honmyoji Temple

Honmyoji is a Nichiren temple in Kumamoto famed as the final resting place of Lord Kato Kiyomasa. The temple was originally built by Kato in 1585 and then moved in 1600 to the newly constructed Kumamoto Castle. Kato died in 1611 and was buried to the west of the castle. Honmyoji burned down in 1614 in the castle and was then transplanted and rebuilt at its current site.
